Charles Wesley Pitts, Jr.

- Charles Wesley Pitts, Jr. left this life on October 2, 2007 at his home in Bishop, TX at the age of 90 with his beloved wife, Lida O. Pitts, at his side. Charles was born in Coleman, TX on March 24, 1917 to Charles Wesley and Clement Dibroll Pitts. At the age of 18 months he had polio which left his right leg smaller and shorter than his left leg, but that was never a handicap to Charles. He attended school in Coleman, TX through high school. After high school he worked with his father on the family farm until 1944 at which time he joined the Air Force as a mechanic with the West Wing of the A.T.C. He remained in the Air Force until the end of World War II.
In 1951 Charles moved to Bishop, TX and started work at Celanese where he worked until he retired 32 years later on November 1, 1982 as a project engineer. The major influence in Charles’ life was his grandfather, a devout Methodist, who brought him up on the Puritan ethic of hard work, honesty, and moral integrity. Charles remained true to these principles the remainder of his life.
Charles was raised a Methodist, but joined the Baptist church with his first wife, Georgia shortly after moving to Bishop in 1951. Charles loved the Lord, and unless he was ill or out of town, you could always count on him being in Sunday School and church on Sundays.
Charles married Georgia Sparkman in 1946, and lived with her for 38 years until her death. In 1984 he married Lida Oliver with whom he shared 23 wonderful years until his death on October 2, 2007. Charles loved life, good food, traveling, and his many friends and family. He was a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. His death will leave a large vacancy in our lives.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Wesley and Clement Pitts, his first wife, Georgia Sparkman Pitts, and his sisters, Elizabeth Wagner and Jane Atchley. He is survived by his wife, Lida Oliver Pitts, his stepchildren, Ann Kaiser, Lane Garrett, Edwin Garrett, and Celeste Garrett, his sister, Kate Phillips, and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Friday, October 5, 2007 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Bishop, TX. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 PM on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Coleman Cemetery in Coleman, TX.
