J.D. was born on June 22, 1958, in Corsicana. He graduated from Bishop High School in June 1976. He often became an instructor in many of the areas in which he was trained. He continually took classes, while working toward an Associates Degree in Occupational Safety and Health. Before his illness, he had maintained a 4.0 grade point average and was on the Dean’s List each semester. After leaving the Zinc Processing Department of ASARCO, he went to work for the Refinery Terminal Fire Company. He then worked for the Portland Police Department from 1983 to 1996. During his time there, he received his Basic, Intermediate and Advances Law Enforcement Certificates. In addition to being a patrol officer and field training officer, he initiated the community’s Neighborhood Watch program; taught some of the department’s Citizen’s Police Academy program classes; was in charge of the Police Explorer group; and became a CPR instructor. Estes was also the city’s DARE officer. He also coached a Portland Little League Prep team during his time off. He earned a certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. In 1996, he became a medic and safety inspector for the Brown and Root Company (now Shaw Company). Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Susan Carol Frank Estes; a daughter, Jennifer Dawn; his father, Glen Estes and mother Bobbie Estes; maternal grandmother, Bunnie Hendrix; sister, Jeannie (Michael) Hanus; three brothers, Daniel (Lisa) Estes, Glen (Linda) Estes and James Estes; numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Aug. 24 at Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. A funeral service was held Aug. 25 at Seaside Chapel. Burial followed at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi.
