He was born on Oct. 4, 1925, to Ernest A. Wernecke and Selma Richter Wernecke in The Grove.
Wernecke was a prominent cattleman in the South Texas area. He was named recipient of the Outstanding Conservation Ranch Award. He was a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Caroline A. Wernecke of Kingsville; two daughters, Carolyn DeCamp and Marilyn (Joe) Ellis, both of Corpus Christi; two sons, Edward (Michele) Wernecke of Agua Dulce and Walter (Sandra) Wernecke of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Public visitation will take place from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Aug. 8 at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary with the family receiving friends that evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 9 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, located at 521 East Doddridge St. in Kingsville, with the Rev. Allan Eckert officiating.
Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in Kingsville.
