He was born Dec. 7, 1916, in Bell County. Ramey was educated in public schools in Waco and Bishop and graduated from Belton High School in 1934. He attended Texas A&I from 1934 to 1937 and attended Baylor University from 1938 to 1942 and graduated with an M.D. degree. He transferred his credits from Baylor College of Medicine to Texas A&I and was awarded a B.S. degree from A&I in 1942. This was customary for state colleges to award B.S. degrees after graduating from medical school. In June 24, 1942, he entered the U.S. Navy Medical Corp and was stationed at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California in 1942 and 1943. Ramey completed four years of Army ROTC while in medical school and resigned his commission when he joined the Navy. He was discharged from the Navy in June 1947. He entered private practice in Bishop and Kingsville in 1947. He retired from practice in 1996 on his 80 birthday. He attended A&I on an athletic scholarship participating in football and basketball. Ramey was inducted into the A&I athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. He enjoyed working for the athletic department. He was the team physician for 45 years and his services were provided at no cost. He was awarded the Booster of the Year award by the Javelina Club in 1994 and 1995. In the 1960’s he established the Charles Frederich Guion Scholarship Fund at the University. He supported financially the Century Club, the Javelina Booster Club and the James Clement Building fund. He served for several years as the director of the Student Health Center. He operated a family health center for 49 years and he was particularly proud of the fact that not a single person was denied medical care because of inability to pay. He was a past member of the Texas Medical Society, Kleberg County Medical Society, and the American Academy of Family Practice. He served as the City County Health officer for 23 years and the Kenedy County Health officer for 45 years. Survivors include his wife, Frances D. Ramey; sons, Robert Lindell (Marilyn) Ramey of Corpus Christi and Ronald Wayne Ramey of Rockport; daughters, Judith Ann Ramey of Seattle Washington and Jacqueline Lyn Ramey of Kingsville; grandchildren, Christopher Brian Ramey of Houston, and Beau Dylan Ramey of Rockport; and great-granddaughter, Brittany Ramey. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. July 28 at Kingsville Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Chamberlain Cemetery. |
