Brahmas use bye week to heal

By Rey Sifuentes Jr. - H.M. King’s Nick Garcia, Artaveus Hayes, Luis Garza and Lane Patterson are all expected to be ready to go when the Brahmas open the district portion of their schedule at Flour Bluff October 12. The Brahmas have a bye (no game) this week. Hayes, Patterson and Garcia are all coming off of ankle injuries while Garza is healing an elbow.
This week’s mid-season break is a huge welcome to the Brahmas who have played gutsy football with limited numbers on the roster.
“We have only thirty two players on varsity and now we have a week off to try and get healthy before our district season starts against Flour Bluff,” Brahma Coach Andrew Hrncir said this past Monday.
A non-district record of two wins and three losses has provided Hrncir and his staff feelings of success and failure. At 2-3, H.M. King stands exactly where they should because of key moments where they have played good and others when they should have been better. Hrncir, however, has enjoyed the learning experience that has been the opening five games of his first lead gig.
“All coaches go through it - not just the head guy - but you are down when you lose, especially games that you were in and thought could have been won, and then you are excited about the kids executing on Friday night when you win,” Hrncir said. “There are ups and downs but you still have to wake up Saturday morning, try to forget about it and get going for the next week.”
Competing in District 31-4A means facing teams such as Tuloso-Midway, Alice, Robstown, Flour Bluff and Calallen. The Brahmas will have to step it up in order to be one of three teams to advance past their district and into the playoffs.
“I think we will be okay and compete. We cannot turn the ball over and not make plays when they are there to be made which is something we struggled with sometimes the first couple of weeks of this season,” Hrncir said. “Our defense has put us in positions to win football games each and every week but sometimes we turn the ball over or have a missed assignment offensively. That is something we cannot do in here because this is a tough district.”
