Seahawks, Badgers prepare for week six

By Rey Sifuentes Jr. - Bishop and Riviera-Kaufer are headed into their respective fifth games this week. Bishop hosts Banquete during homecoming this Friday (7:30 p.m.).
Banquete went 4-6 overall (2-4- in district) last year and are led by Coach Kevin Hermes. Riviera travels to Hebbronville this Friday (7:30 p.m.).
Hebbronnville went 7-3 overall (6-0 in district) last year and are led by Coach Robert Gomez.
The Badgers won their first game of the season beating the Seahawks (41-8) in a District 32-2A opener this past Friday. Badger Coach Barry Wolf was happy to see his team finally click.
“Number one, we were able to cut down on our fumbles and mistakes and when we did fumble, we got it back,” Wolf said. “We were also able to move the ball a lot better and, of course, put it in the endzone. Hopefully we can continue to cut down on our mistakes and be able to capitalize on the other team’s miscues.”
Halfway into this season’s schedule, Wolf has gauged his team’s pros and cons.
“Overall experience is probably our biggest weakness, on defense we are having to fill a lot of holes; we have to fill some big shoes so some days it looks real good and some days it does not,” he said. “Our biggest strength is probably our offense and we knew coming back we were going to have a lot of returners especially on our line. Although we feel like we have answered our questions this year, we are still looking around trying to find people to fill certain spots.”
The Seahawks quickly shrugged last week’s loss and got back to work this past Monday.
“Right now we are working hard on stopping Hebbronville’s best runner (Quarterback) Joseph Maldonado,” Seahawk Coach Arturo De La Rosa said. “Our defense just needs to work hard on making sure we have people who are going to be on the right spots at the right time because Maldonado is a very good back.”
Currently 2-3, the Seahawks have become a better offensive team compared to this time last year when they were 1-4.
“I feel that we are a lot further ahead than last year, we had a rough moment last week with Bishop, but our boys played four good quarters of football and never gave up. We knew Bishop was good and we played them until the end,” De La Rosa said. “At times you look at it and to me I feel that the kids have come a long way to this point. There is always room for improvement but we tell them we will improve as we go along and with five more games we want to play hard.”
