Alyssa Gonzales and Abigail Sedory won their girls doubles match 8-3. Hope Castaneda and Ulani Ramirez shutout their girls doubles opponent 8-0. Winning in girls singles were Gonzales, Castaneda, Ramirez, Kristina Martinez and Rachel Rubio. John Wuensche and Aaron Gerragauch won their match in boys doubles 8-4. Also competing for the boys were Gil Villareal, Darrick Siagon, Jacob Eckert, Colton Williams and Henry Christopher. Tennis Head Coach Ed Gonzales praised his female tennis players for keeping the match against Beeville close. “I was very impressed the way the girls played,” he said. “They ended up winning 5-1 in girls singles and in doubles they went 2-1 (7-2 overall) so I think they did a great job getting us in position to help the team win so it was a good win for the girls.” Year in and year out Gonzales has had to train and season young players. “The only thing you can do as a coach in such a situation is get your players as much match time as possible,” he said. “This was supposed to be an open weekend for us but I knew I had to get my team a match against somebody that would push us a little bit.” Sometimes that means placing your lesser experienced players in matches against better opponents. Win or lose, Gonzales likes having the opportunity to assess match results at the next practice. “Beeville is a team that is somewhat on our level, as far as experience, so you throw our players in with different teams and get some playing time,” Gonzales said. “Monday we came back and tried to work on our mistakes and we did a lot of hitting drills because that is where we made our mistakes on Thursday night.” H.M. King hosts Robstown this Saturday (9 a.m.). “Robstown is new to us this year so I do not have an idea who they have as far as players or who they are bringing back,” Gonzales said. “We have not scouted them so we are going in there and hope our girls keep improving on winning their matches and hope the boys also improve on their match play and hold up their part by being victorious in Robstown.” (Rey Sifuentes Jr. can be reached at rataman2@yahoo.com) |
