The Bishop Badgers were handed a setback in district play losing 28-6 against the Banquete Bulldogs Friday night in Bishop. Preceding the game, Bishop held homecoming ceremonies, with retired teacher and coach Ed Gorny being honored for his service to the school and community with the renaming of Badger Stadium to Ed Gorny Staduim. The Badgers took the field with two key starters out on injuries; senior linebacker Anthony Perea with a fractured right leg and senior receiver Ralph Limas with a broken right ankle. Bishop received the kickoff, with senior Josh Alvarado returning the kick to the Bulldog 49, giving the Badgers excellent field position to start the contest. The Badger offense quickly faced a 4th and 11 at midfield, electing to punt. The Bulldogs started their first offensive possession at the Banquete 25. The Bishop defense stepped up with junior linebacker Austin Villarreal putting pressure on the Banquete quarterback and fellow senior linebacker Roberto Lopez picking off a hurried Bulldog pass attempt for a Badger interception. The Bishop offense continued to struggle against a stubborn Bulldog defense, punting the ball once again on a 4th and 11 from the Banquete 44 yard line. The Bulldogs started at their own 17 yard line, after the punt by junior punter Al Schubert. The Banquete offense coughed up the ball for their second turnover of the night with Villarreal recovering the Bulldog fumble at the Banquete 27 yard line. The Badgers were only able to gain six yards in three plays, facing a 4th and four. Bishop decided to go for the first down and lost the ball on a fumble at the Banquete 18 by senior quarterback Michael Justin Ortega. The Bulldogs took advantage of the Bishop turnover scoring on a 79 yard run down the middle of the field for a Banquete touchdown. The following extra point was good, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter. “The key to the game was we did not capitalize on their miscues and they did,” Bishop Head Coach Barry Wolf said. The quarter ended with the Badgers facing a 3rd and eight at the Bishop 47. On the first play of the second quarter, the Bulldog defense intercepted a Bishop pass attempt and returned it back to the Badger 25. Once again, the Bulldogs scored after a Badger turnover with a 19 yard run into the end zone. The extra point was good; Banquete extends their lead 14-0 with 9:48 left in the second quarter. The Badgers took the kickoff to the Bishop 35 to start their only scoring drive of the night. Ortega kept the drive alive, with the help of the offensive line, pushing his way for a first down on a 4th and one play. The Badger offense put the ball into the end zone on a one yard dive by Ortega. The extra point attempt by Schubert sailed wide left; Badgers close the gap 14-6 with 3:24 remaining in the first half. The Banquete offense faced a 4th and nine after Villarreal brought pressure on the Bulldog quarterback, causing an incomplete pass. After a Bulldog punt, the Badgers started at the Bishop 27 with 1:28 on the clock. With time running out in the first half, the Badgers went to the air. A long pass attempt by Ortega was intercepted at the Bulldog 18, allowing Banquete to keep the ball on the ground to run out the clock and go into the lockers with a 14-6 advantage. The Bulldogs opened the second half on offense at the Bishop 45 after a great kickoff return. Banquete continued their ground attack, moving the ball down the field, eventually scoring a touchdown on an eight yard run into the end zone. The extra point attempt was successful; Banquete 21-6 with 9:08 remaining in the third quarter. The Bishop offense was not able to break the Bulldog defense, punting the ball on a 4th and 10 at the Badger 41 yard line. The Bulldog offense continued to click as they moved the ball down the field with a long pass completion and run to the Badger 25 yard line. Eventually, the Bulldogs scored on a two yard run up the middle of the Badger defense into the end zone. The following extra point attempt split the uprights, giving Banquete a comfortable 28-6 lead with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Badgers struggled to get anything on offense, losing the ball over on downs twice in the final quarter. Banquete was content with the lead and used their running game to eat up the clock, giving the Badgers their first district loss 28-6. “We have two weeks to get ready for Hebbronville,” Wolf said. The Badgers look to bounce back against the Hebbronville Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 in Hebbronville. |
