Sunday's Internet Edition, August 01, 2010.
Winners were selected based on a series of criteria, including a focus on one of four areas: environmental stewardship, youth and education, health and human services or economic development. The total fund for this quarter is $19,240 to be divided among five grant recipients. Winners of the grant monies include Vaquero Festival Association (Freer), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8931, Good Samaritan Pantry, Kingsville Cobras and Greater Kingsville Economic Development Council. The Community Fund, which is managed by URI’s Employee Giving Committee, was established to promote positive programs, projects and events that aim to benefit the local residents of Kleberg, Duval and Jim Hogg counties. “The first-quarter recipients were chosen because they best demonstrate what URI is working to achieve within the Kleberg, Duval and Jim Hogg counties communities,” said Craig Bartels, Senior Vice President for In Situ Operations. “Our focus is on improving the lives of people in these counties through economic development and other community support such as this grant program.” In addition to a community focus, participants were required to demonstrate how their programs, projects or events positively impact local area residents. For individuals, URI is establishing a separate scholarship program to help those in the community who would like to continue their education. URI’s Employee Giving Committee meets on a quarterly basis to evaluate grant applications. The committee is responsible for selecting all grant recipients. The deadline for the second-quarter grant application is November 1, 2007. For more information about the Community Fund, or to obtain a grant application for the next quarter, contact Iris Silguero at (361) 595-5731. |
