The base closed its main gate and re-routed all traffic through their back gate on Cesar Street at around 11:30 Tuesday in response to a security alert initiated on the government vehicle by one of the air station’s military working dogs at the front gate. Upon further review, a suspicious package was discovered. The NAS Kingsville Security Department immediately responded by cordoning off the area and contacting the Kingsville Police Department and Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office to inform them of the situation. The base closed the main gate to all traffic and re-routed personnel to the Cesar St. gate. Vehicles attempting to access the base from Gen. Cavasos Blvd. or Sen. Carlos Truan Blvd. off of Highway 77 were re-routed to the Cesar St. gate as a precautionary measure. The NAS Kingsville Security Department received assistance from the Corpus Christi Police Department’s Bomb Disposal Unit, which conducted a thorough inspection of the suspicious package and safely removed it from the vehicle without incident. By 7 p.m., officials at the air station had determined that the threat had been resolved and re-opened the main gate to all traffic. The base returned to a modified Condition Alpha state of readiness, one step ahead of normal. Specific information on the security measures is being withheld at this time due to an ongoing investigation into the matter by the Navy Criminal Investigative Service and Navy policy of not commenting on force protection and physical security measures. Personnel who reported to work at NAS Kingsville today entered the base through the main gate as usual, and no unexpected delays were anticipated. |
