Taste of college life pumps up students

By Julie Navejar
Texas A&M-Kingsville -
The office of special programs at Texas A&M University-Kingsville provided Coastal Bend junior high and high school students with an intensive look at college life this summer.
The Educational Talent Search program provided college awareness, leadership and preparation to nearly 100 students through either weeklong or overnight College Exploration Camps held on campus. Students participating in the program came from Kingsville, Bishop, Riviera, Ricardo, Alice, Falfurrias, Corpus Christi and Robstown.
“The new Educational Talent Search program is making vital academic connections between South Texas schools, students and their families and Texas A&M-Kingsville in support of higher education,” said Mary L. Gonzalez, assistant vice president for the division of special programs.
High school students visited the campus for a week of intensive workshops, including College ABCs, Personal Statement Writing, Financial Aid Information and Social Learning Styles, just to name a few.
But it wasn’t all work and no play because they toured the Natural Toxins Research Center’s Serpentarium and the John E. Conner Museum while on campus.
They also took field trips to the Corpus Christi Art Museum and Museum of Science and History and the Texas State Aquarium.
During the junior high school overnight camps, the students attended academic and personal preparation workshops.
They also toured the Serpentarium and went on a guided tour of the King Ranch.
At the end of each program, a special recognition dinner was held for the students and their parents. “The opportunity to see so many parents come out in support of their children was the highlight of the summer camp,” said. James Pollack, Educational Talent Search summer counselor.
Based on the success of this year’s program and the continued federal funding, similar programs will be held in future summers.
