Child safety grant means car seats for some families

Detective Eric Perez, left, and Chief of Police Rick Torres show off car seats that are part of Safe Riders Program next month.
- The Kingsville Police Department has received a Safe Riders Grant under the auspices of the Safe Riders Child Safety Seat Distribution and Education Program.
The grant will provide safety seats for low-income families who travel on Texas highways.
Detective Eric Perez and Patrol officer Cynthia Flores submitted the grant and will begin the Safe Riders Program next month.
Children safety seats will be available for Kleberg County families who qualify as follows:
• Self-certification of financial need.
• Have a vehicle and a working safety belt (lap and shoulder belt required for booster seats).
• Attend a mandatory one-hour class in order to learn how to use the safety seat correctly.
• One seat per family.
Classes will be held at the police department, although the date and times have yet to be determined.
“Having a child in a safety seat is very important — and it’s the law,” Perez said.
