Old Mexico Bakery demolished

- Marcos Macarena Jr. and his sister, Myrna Macarena Barrera, watch as their family’s former business Mexico Bakery is demolished Tuesday afternoon. Their parents, Marcos Mendoza Macarena and Ladislada Avila Macarena, opened Mexico Bakery in 1959 at 712 East Alice. The business closed in 1993 after their parent’s deaths. Mexico Bakery, which opened from 4 a.m. until 10 p.m., was a family operated business that included the older children Juan, Julia, Francisco and Marcos Jr. Throughout the years Mexico Bakery remained a very popular gathering place for community leaders, Kingsville residents, Austin Elementary School students and teachers. Customers could buy biscuits for five cents, coffee, sweetbread, tacos, tortillas and special occasion cakes during the early 1960s. Mrs. Macarena often gave credit to her loyal customers. The brother and sister said they are appreciative of the city taking care of demolishing the structure. Both said they would carry the memories of Mexico Bakery in their hearts. The building was one of over 40 buildings being demolished by the City of Kingsville under the Kingsville Wipe Out Program, which demolishes abandoned houses and commercial buildings as unsafe structures. The latest round of demolitions, being overseen by the Kingsville Police Department in cooperation with the National Guard, is expected to take about two weeks.
